Every ring we make begins with a decision about metal, and it affects colour, durability, upkeep and cost more than most people expect. This collection brings together pieces across all the metals we work in at our Hatton Garden workshop.The choice comes down to four options in practice. Platinum is naturally white, dense and hard wearing, and needs no plating, but it is the most expensive. White gold gives a similar look for less, but is rhodium plated and needs that plating refreshed periodically. Yellow gold is the lowest maintenance of all, since its colour is natural and permanent. Rose gold takes its warmth from copper, which also makes it the hardest of the three golds.Carat matters as much as colour. Eighteen carat gold is seventy five per cent pure and holds colour better, while nine carat is harder and stands up to more abuse.
