What that paperwork records is the four characteristics that determine both how a diamond looks and what it costs. Cut governs how the stone returns light and is the one that most affects whether a diamond looks alive on the hand. Colour and clarity are graded on scales where the differences at the top are invisible without magnification but very visible on the price.
